The difference between hosting at WordPress.com & installing WordPress on our servers
You are able to setup your website at WordPress.com for free with limited features, or with paid yearly plans albeit with possibility of the host server being a fair distance away from you and your target audience, thus slower connection and potential loss of clients. With HostSG hosting your WordPress content, users based in Singapore and South East Asia are guaranteed to have a much faster and more reliable connection to the content with lower chances of connection issues, as well as local support in your time zone compared to hosting at WordPress.
Installing WordPress
To install WordPress, you have to download an archive of files and upload them to your FTP server. Next is to setup your database and database user, and configure WordPress accordingly in order for everything to work properly. The detailed steps can be found below.
You should have the below ready
- Desired WordPress version files (latest version recommended: https://wordpress.org/download/ )
- Database & database user credentials (MySQL)
- Access to your FTP
Steps:
- Login into your cPanel > File Manager / Login to your FTP server with a FTP client like FileZilla
- Select the directory you wish to install WordPress on, or create one with your desired name.
- Extract and upload the archive files into the directory. (If you want WordPress on www.yourdomain.com , upload the files into "public_html" which is also known as the root or default folder for your website.)
- Go to your website that you want to install WordPress on, using a web browser like Internet Explorer, Firefox or Chrome.
- Select your desired language you want the site to use, and continue on.
- The next page should show you a list of requirements which I have already listed as a prerequisite above, continue on.
- Now you should be seeing fields, enter your MySQL information in them accordingly, and move on.
- Run the installer.
- Fill up the boxes for credentials or information shown in the next page and move on. (You will be able to edit these anytime in the admin control panel.)
- Viola, your WordPress site should be up and running, ready to be configured to your liking!
